1. Yellow-bellied toad (Bombina variegata)
Location: eastern Carpathians, Transylvania, Romania.
Mating yellow-bellied toads. Note the yellow colouration on the right flank of the male. I photographed this pair in a water filled indentation created by a logging truck on a forest track. This is one of the best places to look for them.
When they feel threatened their defence mechanism is to play dead, or is this a display of a venomous threat? Either way, as soon as we lowered this toad back into the water it 'shot away' fast.
